From May 6th to May 10th, 2024, Newfoundland and Labrador will observe “Stop Sexual Exploitation Week.” As part of our CASEY (Coalition Against the Sexual Exploitation of Youth) Week of Recognition, we are offering a free Trauma-Informed Yoga Class for Youth, available to individuals up to the age of 21.

Bringing a water bottle and wearing comfortable clothing suitable for movement (loose and comfy attire is recommended) would be beneficial. Mats and props are provided for your convenience. Additionally, some participants may choose to bring a journal, although it is not required.

Description of the class:

Trauma-informed yoga is designed to be a safe space that can support healing and empowerment through gentle movement, breath awareness, and mindfulness. This class is open to all, regardless of your level of experience with yoga or your personal journey. Throughout the session, we honour the principle of choice, offering variations and modifications to suit your unique needs and preferences. The aim is to create a supportive environment where you can explore your body, mind, and breath at your own pace, without judgment or pressure.

Throughout the session, we will focus on cultivating a sense of safety and grounding in the present moment. You will be guided through gentle yoga postures (asanas) with an emphasis on breath awareness and mindful movement. These practices are intended to help you reconnect with your body, release tension, and build resilience.

The instructor will offer variations and modifications to ensure that everyone can participate comfortably and safely. You are encouraged to listen to your body and make choices that feel right for you.

Emotions may arise during our practice, and we invite you to approach them with curiosity and kindness. The instructor is here to support you with compassion and respect, and we welcome any questions or concerns you may have.

As we conclude our practice, we will take time for relaxation and reflection, allowing you to integrate the benefits of your yoga practice and carry them with you off the mat.
